Celebrating International Women's Day

This week, in assembly, the students heard about International Women's Day linked to the theme 'Give to Gain', which promotes the importance of role models in sport, STEM and politics.

Students are encouraged to enter the competition run by the art department to create an artwork about a woman that inspires/d them. The deadline for this is Monday 9th March.

On Wednesday, all of Year 8 embarked on a trip to the Globe Theatre to see ‘Romeo and Juliet’ ahead of studying the play in the summer term. They thoroughly enjoyed the performance and we were pleased to receive praise from the public for their conduct on the train and in the theatre. Thank you, Ms Ruby and Ms Brown. For World Book Day, we celebrated the importance of reading. Our students in KS3 read with their tutor for 25 minutes a day, four days a week and participate in our daily vocabulary programme. We read challenging, diverse and enriching texts in English lessons, have a wonderful library staffed by students and, at line up on Thursday, we held a raffle to award book vouchers to students in each year group. We also celebrated with various activities during Fun Friday. Thank you Ms Twyman. We had another successful Careers Week, with subject teachers diving into the world of careers relating to their subjects. Students heard from professionals in a variety of fields, from investment banking, conservation science to film colourist. Thank you, Mr Mathys.

On Tuesday, the Year 9 and 10 netball teams played Riddlesdown. The students showed great skill but it was a tough competition. Keyanna was player of the match and a special well done to our students who performed excellently whilst observing Ramadan. Year 9 also played Coombe Wood, keeping the score at 6-4 until the last two quarters, resulting in a loss. Ayanna-Mae scored all five goals and Tinuade was voted as the player of the match by the opposition.

Finally, thank you for your support regarding the online messages sent to young people encouraging violent behaviour in the community. You have remained calm and helpful. The Local Authority are asking parents to ensure their child refrains from any engagement, online or otherwise, regarding promotion of similar events on Monday 9th March. The police will ensure an enhanced presence around Croydon. Parents should be checking their child’s phone on a regular basis to be confident their child is not exposed to inappropriate content and is also conducting themselves sensibly (including kindness).
