Future scholars: Year 10 explore the dreaming spire

On 28th April, thirty of our Year 10 students traded their usual classrooms for the historic quadrangles of Mansfield College, Oxford.
This campus visit offered a unique glimpse into life at one of the world’s most prestigious universities, proving that the "dreaming spires" are well within reach for our hardworking students.
Insider perspectives
The day kicked off with an insightful talk centred on the reality of university life. Our group had the privilege of meeting Student Ambassadors currently studying Law, Geography, and Maths. These ambassadors shared their personal journeys and explained how university societies – ranging from sports to niche hobbies – act as a vital support network, making the transition from home to campus life much smoother.
The ambassadors also shed light on the excitement of Freshers’ Week and the strategic importance of super-curricular activities. Students learnt that reading beyond the curriculum or entering essay competitions isn't just about extra work; it’s the key to building a competitive personal statement.
Living the Oxford life
It wasn't all lectures and notes! Our students got a ‘behind-the-scenes’ look at the residential side of Oxford:
- The residence: students toured the on-site accommodation, getting a real feel for where they might live and study.
- Lunch in style: a highlight of the day was dining in the college’s grand hall. With its long wooden tables and soaring ceilings, it felt like stepping straight into a Harry Potter film.
Myth-busting and academic tasters
Oxford can often feel like a world away, but the Mansfield team was quick to set the record straight. They emphasized that Oxford seeks talent from all backgrounds and that academic potential is the only thing that truly matters.
To wrap up the day, students participated in two high-level taster sessions:
- Linguistics: An exploration of the science behind language and how we communicate.
- Engineering and Ethics: A thought-provoking look at the moral responsibilities of modern innovators.
Student reflections
Walking the same halls as world leaders and pioneering scientists certainly left an impression on our Year 10s, with responses like:
"I always thought Oxford was just for people in movies," said one participant. "But after seeing the rooms and talking to the ambassadors, I realised they were just like us. It’s definitely made me think about applying in a few years."
A huge thank you to Mansfield College for hosting us and to our students for representing the school so brilliantly!
