Orchard Park High School

Amazing end of term with the Big Speech final!

Last Friday we held our Big Speech Final, with 16 House winners in Years 7, 8 and 9 on the theme of 'I'm exactly where I am meant to be'.

Our three finalists, Carvalli in Year 9 spoke about how Orchard Park had helped bring him confidence and find his voice, Holly in Year 8 spoke about how performing arts had changed her confidence and encouraged others to find themselves and Omotalani in Year 7 spoke about the importance of being yourself and not giving into peer pressure. Due to the amazing performance and memorising her speech, our winner was Omatalani – huge congratulations.

On Thursday, 30 of our Year 9 and 40 of our Year 10 students attended a workshop led by Mansfield College, Oxford. They learnt about the application process, the courses on offer and student life at Oxford University. Students had an opportunity to engage in a debate about whether footballers should be paid more than nurses. The talk also addressed how students can access financial support for their studies and debunked the myths surrounding getting access to one of the most prestigious Universities in the world.

Our Year 11 students have made a brilliant start to their final Pre-Public Examinations. Health & Fitness students have successfully completed their Synoptic Project, Art students have undertaken another  five hour examination and French students have conducted their speaking examinations with confidence. Yesterday, drama students completed their performance examination with maturity and pride. Ms Palmieri wanted to praise Alex M, Zahmari, Dylan, Riley and Janice for their focus, leadership and commitment to their roles. Their written Pre-Public Examinations begin after February Half Term.

This week we have celebrated our Zero Heroes – students without a single behaviour point – because they demonstrated outstanding behaviour, completed all their homework, wore their uniform perfectly and upheld our school values. They were treated to a hot chocolate morning during Period 0. This event is our way of recognising and rewarding their efforts, ensuring they feel appreciated for their exemplary conduct. Over 200 students were recognised as Zero Heroes.

We return to school on Monday 23rd February.
