Buzzing for books

This week, all Year 7 and 8 students received a free book from Bookbuzz.

Playing the stock market

On Monday, the Year 10 business studies groups attended an engaging Investment Training session with the Talent Foundry. Stephen Kelly, from M&G International Savings and Investment, generously supported the session, providing insights into his work in the trading industry and concepts such as commodities, pensions, shares, bonds, property, and cryptocurrencies as potential investment opportunities. The highlight of the day was a simulated Stock Exchange game, where students experienced investment decision-making and navigating the highs and lows of the stock market. Well done to Mason, Tommy, Zain, and Denira who demonstrated impressive risk-taking and analytical skills.

Green Careers Week

On Thursday, students in Years 8 to 10 took part in the IGD Green Careers Employability Workshop as part of Green Careers Week 2025. The 45-minute online sessions introduced students to the world of green careers and the key employability skills needed for a sustainable future. Industry experts shared real-world insights into how businesses are tackling climate change, reducing waste, and promoting sustainability.

Through interactive challenges and reflection activities, students explored how their interests and skills could align with exciting career paths in the growing green economy. “It was inspiring to hear from real professionals who are helping the planet through their work,” said one Year 10 student. A huge thank you to IGD and all the guest speakers for inspiring our students to think greener about their futures!

UK Parliament visit

On Wednesday, an Education and Engagement team from UK Parliament visited OPHS to deliver a series of talks. Throughout these sessions, students gained a comprehensive understanding of how the UK Parliament operates, including the distinct roles and responsibilities of Members of Parliament (MPs) and members of the House of Lords. The assemblies also empowered students by highlighting various ways for citizens to make their voices heard within the democratic process, encouraging active participation in civic life from a young age.

Bookbuzz

This week, all Year 7 and 8 students received a free book from Bookbuzz, the UK’s largest children’s reading charity (pictured above). We hope they enjoy reading them.

Food bank collection

Today we finished our food bank collections. Thank you to everyone who donated items. These will be taken to City Harvest next week. We will be holding another food bank as part of our Christmas challenge in December.

Reminders

Next week is Kindness Week. This starts with showing our support for Anti-Bullying Week by wearing odd socks to school on Monday. Please join in!

Good luck to our Year 11 students, who begin their Pre Public Exams next week.
